Caribbean Athletes to showcase their talent at upcoming Atlanta Georgia Meet

The 2016 Atlanta Georgia Relays, is right around the corner. This year the event is celebrating its second running and some of the most talented athletes from the Caribbean region, and the United Stated will be on hand to participate in the exciting event.

The Atlanta Georgia Relays, set for May 28, actually started as a product of the Atlanta Spartans — a non-profit organization dedicated to positively influencing the development of youth to help them become credible athletes and role models in their communities through track and field.
Taneisha Lewis Murray, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Co-Founder of the event, said international anticipation is already growing for the second edition of the meet. Lewis Murray told Bahamas Athletics efforts have grown into an international track and field event.

“In 2015 we only started out with three Caribbean schools and they were basically from Jamaica. This year alone we have nine schools out of Jamaica, we have six schools from Trinidad. We have massive support from The Bahamas. We have a team coming up from Guyana and Puerto Rico. We have teams sign up from throughout the United States. It is amazing to see where we started and what the brand has transformed into today,” she said.

According to Lewis Murray, organizers have created a platform where new Caribbean athletes can shine, and showcase their talent in an arena and receive tremendous attention from other international countries that are ready to compete as well as recruiters.

“What we have done is visited a lot of universities to ensure that the recruiters and representatives from the universities are coming out to give these Caribbean athletes who are coming to Atlanta to showcase their talent perhaps the opportunities of being recruited,” she said.
With Atlanta being home to some of the most influential teams in sports, as well as the 1996 Olympics, Lewis Murray said she is elated that there is now an international track and field meet that could be held annually and that the city can be proud of.

“With the growing support of the city of Atlanta, we hope to create an event that can last for years to come. Our expectation beyond 2016 is to see the brand become so huge and successful. In the next five years, we are looking for a market of over 150,000 people in the arena. All the Caribbean islands can come together here, at the Atlanta Georgia Relays and give an opportunity for all the individuals that couldn’t get an opportunity before, to come to the United States to meet on a platform to showcase who they are and what they have to offer at the arena,” she said.
