Sasha Wells... My Story

This is the story of a young runner striving for greatness. My name is Sasha Wells, I’m newly 17 and I love track & field.

My dad used to run track professionally so some of my fondest memories are going to the track as a child. My other siblings and I would run around, go jumping and digging in the sand pit while playing with the other kids there. I was, and still am homeschooled, so it was a good way for me to get my energy out after doing school in the house all day. My dad stopped running when I was around 6 or 7 so we stopped going to the track but that did not stop my love for running. Every time I had the chance to play with other kids I would always challenge them to a race. Sometimes I won. Other times I lost. But it always served to make me want to run faster.

My interest in track and field has always been with me. The first dream job I can remember having was to be an Olympian, just like my dad. As I grew older I began to move away from that dream but I did not leave it behind. I always carried it with me, deep inside. When I started track in 8th grade my dream sprung to life again and it has not died.

I would definitely say my first track inspiration is my dad. Other than that I really don’t have an inspiration or idol but admire all the athletes I see at the top.

I’m in Club Monica Athletics with Dianne Woodside as my coach. My current events are the 100m, 200m & the 100m hurdles.

My first year in track I didn’t make any national teams. My second year in track I made the Carifta team where I came 6th in the 100m hurdles, but because of a mildly strained groin muscle I did not continue training after Carifta. My third year in track I made the Carifta team again and I came 5th overall in the 100m hurdles. I also went on to make the IAAF World Youth team for the 100m hurdles. This year I expect to be doing bigger and better things. I’m shooting for as many meets as I can go to and as many medals as I can win.

My goals for my track career is to get a scholarship and go off to school but my ultimate goal is to become a professional track athlete.

I just want to thank my wonderful mama for always supporting me. My dad for always giving me good advice and my awesome coaches for training me.

Track has always been a part of my life and it will continue to be until I’m old and grey. I’m going to continue to do bigger and better things, just watch me.
